Dictionary of Tools

DRILL PRESS : A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, splattering it against that freshly-stained heirloom piece you were drying.

WIRE WHEEL : Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprints and hard-earned guitar calluses from fingers in about the time it takes you to say, "Yeooww, S**T!!!"

ELECTRIC HAND DRILL : Normally used for spinning pop rivets in their holes until you die of old age.

SKIL SAW : A portable cutting tool used to make studs too short.

PLIERS : Used to round off bolt heads. Sometimes used in the creation of blood-blisters.

BELT SANDER : An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs.

HACKSAW : One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle. It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes.

VISE-GRIPS : Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand.

WELDING GLOVES : Heavy duty leather gloves used to prolong the conduction of intense welding heat to the palm of your hand.

TWEEZERS : A tool for removing wood splinters and wire wheel wires.

RADIAL ARM SAW : A large stationary power saw primarily used by most shops to scare neophytes into choosing another line of work.

CRAFTSMAN 1/2 x 24-INCH SCREWDRIVER : A very large pry bar that inexplicably has an accurately machined screwdriver tip on the end opposite the handle.

TROUBLE LIGHT : The home mechanic's own tanning booth. Sometimes called a drop light, it is a good source of vitamin D, "the sunshine vitamin," which is not otherwise found under cars at night. Health benefits aside, its main purpose is to consume 40-watt light bulbs at about the same rate that 105mm howitzer shells might be used during, say, the first few hours of the Battle of the Bulge. More often dark than light, its name is somewhat misleading. The accessory socket within the base has been permanently rendered useless, unless requiring a source of 120 volt power to shock the mechanic senseless.

PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER : Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids, opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads.

STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER : A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws into non-removable screws.

AIR COMPRESSOR : A machine that takes energy produced in a coal-burning power plant 200 miles away and transforms it into compressed air that travels by hose to a Chicago Pneumatic impact wrench that grips rusty bolts which were last over tightened 30 years ago by someone at Ford, and instantly rounds off their heads. Also used to quickly snap off lug nuts.

PRY BAR : A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50 cent part.

HOSE CUTTER : A tool used to make hoses too short.

HAMMER : Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit. Women primarily use it to make gaping holes in walls when hanging pictures.

MECHANIC'S KNIFE : Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic parts. Especially useful for slicing work clothes, but only while they are in use. It is also useful for removing large chunks of human flesh from the user's hands.

DAMMIT TOOL : (I have lots of these) Any handy tool that you grab and throw across the garage while yelling "DAMMIT!!!” at the top of your lungs.

Installing Mac OS on your PC

This is a quick guide on how to install Mac OS X (Leopard) on your plain old PC. It works for most computers but may require some extra research if it does not work with these directions.

Things you will need...

1. iDeneb 1.4 ISO (You can also try the iATKOS, and iPC releases)
2. gParted Live CD ISO

Preconditions:
1. Burn iDeneb 1.4 and gParted Live CD ISO's. Use ImgBurn if you don't have anything to burn them with.
2. You must have a 15-20GB partition available before installing. If you don't have one then use the Disk Managment Console in Vista to resize/create a partition. You can also use gParted to do this.
3. Boot system in windows and go to device manager and look at the hardware you have installed. Take a screenshot and print it out or get a tool that will give you all the info about your hardware. You will need this info when you are installing OSX, and choosing what drivers to install. (This is not required but can make it easier. You can just install all the drivers and hope for the best, or expirement.)

Adding OSX to Vista's Boot Menu:
1. Put in the iDeneb DVD.
2. Browse the DVD and navigate to: /user/standalone/i386/
(You can also get the file here: chain0)
3. Copy file 'chain0' to C:\
4. Open up a command prompt window. (Click Start>Type 'CMD' and press enter. Click Start>Run>Type 'CMD' and press enter if you are still using XP)
5. Type and press enter: bcdedit /copy {current} /d "Mac OS X"
6. Type and press enter: bcdedit /enum active
7. Look for Windows Boot Loader section where the description is 'Mac OS X'.
8. Right-Click on the command prompt window and select 'Mark', Select the identifier (Should look something like: {ab123456-c7d8-e9f0-g1h2-i34567890123} ... including the {}) for 'Mac OS X', Right-Click again to copy the selection.
9. Type and press enter: bcdedit /set {ab123456-c7d8-e9f0-g1h2-i34567890123} PATH \chain0
10. Type and press enter: bcdedit /enum active
You should see output that looks like the output below. Note the bold areas. Make sure yours is the same. Note: The identifier is going to be different than the one below.

Installing OSX:
1. Reboot your computer with the iDeneb DVD in the drive.
2. Press any key when prompted to boot off DVD.
3. Wait untill the OSX boots. Click on Utilities in the top menu bar, select Disk Utility.
4. Select the correct hard drive, and partition in the left menu. Click the Erase tab at the top. Name the partition whatever you want, for format use Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Click Apply or whatever that button is on the bottom. (You will need to do this every time you reinstall)
5. Exit the Disk Utililty by clicking on File>Quit in the top menu bar. You can now begin your installation.
6. Click Next or whatever until you get to the installation location page. There is should be one drive you can choose to install to at the bottom. Click on it and click Next.
7. On the last page before you install there is a customize button, you will need to click on it and select what drivers/patches you want. You will need to install the the correct drivers for your system for audio, usb, ps/2, and video hardware to function correctly. I recommend that you boot up your system in window and find out what kind of devices you are running so you know what you need to install. Also be careful with the patches/fixes, click on them for more info and make sure they are what you need. I recomment writting down the settings before installingm tha way if something doesn't work you can use the same settings and fix the one thing that doesn't work.
8. After you click install there will be a box that pops up that says checking installation. Click 'Skip.

Change Boot Partition to Vista Partition:
1. Before you do this make sure everything you want to work works on your OSX installation to avoid unnecessary work.
2. Put in the gParted Live CD. Reboot. Boot off the CD if/when prompted.
3. Press enter on all prompts.
4. Once it loads run gParted, select the drive you have Vista/OSX installed on.
5. Select the first (Vista) partition on that drive. Right-Click on it and select Change Flags.
6. Select 'Boot', click OK. Click Apply if you need to.
7. Exit by double-clicking the Exit/Reboot icon on the desktop.
Once your computer reboots you will see the Vista boot loader and the new Mac OS X boot menu option. Select it and press enter. You may have to select it again from the OSX bootloader menu to boot.

Fixing Sleep Mode:
...maybe...
1. Open up a Terminal window (HD>Applications>Utilities>Terminal)
2. Execute the following commands:

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 3
sudo pmset autorestart 1

3. Reboot.
- This may not work for you. It may work on some computers.

iPhone 2.2.1 Jailbreak Guide

Things you will need:

• iTunes
  
• QuickPwn 2.2.5
• iPhone 3G firmware 2.2.1 or iPhone 2G firmware 2.2.1
• iPhone Bootloaders 3.9 and 4.6 (Only needed if unlocking iPhone 2G)
  

Before you begin:
WARNING!: Do NOT upgrade to 2.2.1 if you want to have your iPhone 3G unlocked. Only 2.2 can be unlocked.)

Download and install iTunes. Download QuickPwn 2.2.5, and the correct iPhone firmware file for your iPhone, and Bootloaders if you have an iPhone 2G (1st Gen) and wish to unlock it.

Goto iPhone>Settings>General>About and make sure your iPhone 2G or 3G is at version 2.2.1. If it is at a lower or higher version then you will need to restore it to 2.2.1. See restoring 2.2.1 section.

Restore to 2.2.1:
1. Open iTunes
2. Connect your iPhone
3. Go to the Summary Tab for the phone. (Click on the iPhone in the device menu on the left side, then click on the Summary tab)
4. Hold the Shift button on your keyboard and click the Restore button on iTunes, then browse to your iPhone 2.2 firmware file. Make sure you select the correct file. 3G firmware files start with 'iPhone1,2_2.2.1...' and 2G firmware files start with 'iPhone1,1_2.2.1...'.
5. Click Open.

This will restore your iPhone to 2.2. After it is complete sync your iPhone, and restore previous settings when promted to set up as new phone or restore.

iPhone 3G Jailbreak:
1. Plug in the iPhone.
2. Run QuickPwn 2.2.5
3. Click next.
4. Click 'Browse' and locate the firmware file for your iPhone. It may be be found automatically if you updated your iPhone using iTunes.
Make sure you select the correct file. 3G firmware files start with 'iPhone1,2_2.2.1...' and 2G firmware files start with 'iPhone1,1_2.2.1...'.
5. Click Next.
6. Check Only 'Add Cydia' and 'Replace Boot Logos' (Replaces apple boot logo's with pineapples)
Uncheck 'Add Installer'.
7. Click Next.
8. Click Next to Start.
9. Follow the directions in QuickPwn.

After the process is complete it will reboot and will be Jailbroken and you will have a Cydia icon on the SpringBoard. To unlock see: iPhone 3G Unlock and Adding a Repo to Cydia

iPhone 2G Jailbreak/Unlock:
1. Plug in the iPhone.
2. Run QuickPwn 2.2.5
3. Click next.
4. Click 'Browse' and locate the firmware file for your iPhone. It may be be found automatically if you updated your iPhone using iTunes.
Make sure you select the correct file. 3G firmware files start with 'iPhone1,2_2.2.1' and 2G firmware files start with 'iPhone1,1_2.2.1'.
5. Click Next.
6. Check Only 'Add Cydia' and 'Replace Boot Logos' (Replaces apple boot logo's with pineapples)
Check 'Unlock iPhone' if you wish to unlock the iPhone (Not needed if you will be using it only on the AT&T network). Uncheck 'Add Installer'.
7. Click Next.
8. Click 'Browse' for each bootloader file and locate the appropriate bootloader files. (This dialog will come up only if you chose to unlock the iPhone)
9. Click Next to Start.
10. Follow the directions in QuickPwn.

After the process is complete it will reboot and will be Jailbroken and you will have a Cydia icon on the SpringBoard. If you chose to unlock then your phone will be unlocked.

After you are finished:
Open Cydia and let it update. Look at the sections tab (at the bottom of the screen) There are more repositories under the repositories sections which you can install. Each repository gives you different packages (apps/themes/tools/etc). If you want to install the most popular repo's and some useful tools I have made a script to do this with instruction on how to execute it. You can find it here or scroll down... it's the next post.

IMPORTANT!: DO NOT upgrade to newer versions of the firmware on the iphone. It will remove the Jailbreak and you will have to wait for the new version of QuickPwn to come out that supports Jailbreaking the new version, and Jailbreak it again. I was bored so I updated my APT/Cydia app installer script.

Instructions:
Pre-conditions: iPhone is Jailborked, there is some free space on it, auto-lock is set to never (Settings>General>Auto-Lock), iTunes is installed on ur pooter, iPhone charged and/or plugged in, WiFi is on and connected to the internet tubes.
1. Download ipwn221.sh
2. Install iPhoneBrowser.
3. If you are using iPhoneBrowser, open iTunes and connect your phone to the computer, then run iPhonebrowser.
4. Copy ipwn.sh to /tmp
5. Close everything.
6. Open Cydia on the iPhone, Click on the search tab, search for and install MobileTerminal.
7. Open MobileTerminal.
8. Type in 'su', press enter, type in 'alpine', press enter. (You may want to change the password using the 'passwd' command later.)
9. Type 'cd /tmp', press enter.
10. Type 'chmod a+x ipwn.sh', press enter.
11. Type './ipwn221.sh', press enter.

This will take some time. Once finished Springboard will be restarted. (It is recommended that you restart your iPhone once completed)

Once this process is complete be sure to turn off SSH in BossPrefs.

Fix Vista Folder Views - One Folder View No Matter What Content Is Inside

As some of you may be aware the 'Apply to all folders' button in the folder options button only seems to remember your settings until you close the window or reboot your machine. After searching online I found instructions on how to fix this and made one easy reg patch. It will set all folder views to one folder view you choose no matter what content is in the folder.

Instruction:
1. Right-click and save this file somewhere where you will be able to find it.
2. Double-click on the file and click 'Yes' and 'Ok' on the following dialogs.
3. Logout/login or reboot your machine.
4. Open up C:\
5. Set up the folder options however you like.
6. Click the 'Apply to all folders' button and you are done.

Antivirus 2008, 2009, etc

There are many variants of the AV2008,AV2009, MSAV virus/malware out right now. Most of the removal guides are not very complete - including TrendMicro, Symantec, and many forums.

What I have found, is that most fail to remove the actual driver/rootkit that is running. Although the other portions are removed, and the system may seem to be running "ok", you will become frustrated if you have to install something with Windows Installer, or an msi product. This crapware breaks the windows installer service, and none of the MSKB's will help you in fixing this. You will not be able to re-install any version of installer. The reason: the rootkit locks the registry keys required to reinstall or use windows installer. It also breaks .cmd files from running. It also breaks certain parts of network connectivity within Novell environments; I am not sure about AD, but it probably breaks mapped drives. It will not be removed or even recognized by most A/V products. Including fan boys Spybot, AdAware, SuperAntispyware, ComboFix, BigFix. So you'll have to do some dirty work yourself. It really isn't that difficult or involved, you just have to use some common sense.

You do not need to be in safe-mode to remove this virus, so if you are fixing remotely, you can follow these instructions.

Download and run the latest version of Autoruns from www.sysinternals.com. Make sure to run this as administrator. Hit ESC when it starts scanning. Go to Options and check all three options. "Include Empty Locations" "Verify Code Signatures" "Hide Signed Microsoft Entries". This will create a smaller list of items to sort through, as well as show you items that may be attempting to masquerade as Microsoft.

Assuming you have already performed the initial clean (you can find several forums with detailed instructions, Symantec and Trend both have detailed removal instructions as well.) you will be wanting to pay special attention to the "Drivers" section. You can take the time to google each item if you aren't sure what they are. The driver you are looking for has a random name. In one case, it was zjjzzjjzz.sys. In another, it was swuummni.sys. Basically - if you google the name of the driver, you will likely get ZERO results. This is actually a good thing, since it is likely the driver you need to remove. It may show up as "Cannot find file" in Autoruns. Another way is to go to device manager, show hidden devices, expand out the "Non-Plug and Play Drivers". Some things show up in Autoruns that don't show up here, but so far, this driver DOES show up in device manager.

Once you have identified the driver, download and install the latest version of Unlocker. Open up a cmd prompt (as administrator, of course) cd to program files\unlocker. type: "unlocker c:\windows\system32\drivers\[name of driver].sys"
Hit enter. It may say "No handles found: what action?" In that case, select delete. If it IS locked, then select "delete" and click "unlock all".

Then in device manager, right click on the driver, select "disable". (don't reboot.) Then right click, select uninstall. (don't reboot.) Delete the entry in autoruns.

Reboot.

Verify that the driver no longer exists. (You may want to use GMER to view the file system, if it doesn't show up, then check hidden items only. If it shows up, select it, press kill, then delete. I haven't needed to do this yet.)

The locked registry keys shouldn't be locked anymore, and windows update, and other MSI products should work. If not, the MSKB on MSI Installer - Reinstall should work.

**EDIT**

I work at a hospital, so we get many infected machines. Another virus that showed up today, (didn't know it was a virus at first) was completely ignored by Trend, and by mistake, found that NOD32 had trouble with it too. It recognized it, but was unable to remove it. On the first machine, we got a call that the computer was "unresponsive". Would hang on reboot, and after hard booting, it would hang shortly after login (locally, or network.) So the first one, I did all my normal investigative work - in safe mode, because that was the only way it wouldn't lock up. I didn't see anything out of the norm, and RootkitUnhooker didn't see suspicious behavior, nor did GMER. The key here: I wasn't looking closely enough. I reimaged that machine because I had already wasted enough time. Then two more came up. So I looked closer. And wouldn't you know, under Image Hijacks (Autoruns), explorer.exe was attached to c:\program files\microsoft common\wuauclt.exe. Doh. Then it was simple to just remove the file and kill the registry entry. BUT.... When I plugged the usb key I had used on that machine to my computer back at the office... my computer running NOD32 found "autorun.inf" virus right away. And before I could react, it rebooted and then NOD32 was unable to remove. Manual removal was possible without booting into safe mode, maybe because NOD was at least doing something. But be aware.
