Wubi: Install Ubuntu linux without partitioning your drive.

There is a cool tool for installing Ubuntu linux without having to partion your hard drive. It's called Wubi, although it's in its beta phase it works great. Instead of repartitioning your existing drive, it creates drive image files on your C: drive and boot/runs off the images. There is no modification to the mbr, or system files besides an entry into the boot.ini file for an extra boot option. It is also uninstallable.

Wubi Site: http://www.wubi-installer.org/

Wubi for Ubuntu 7.10 can be found here. It is still in alpha phase of development but works fine. Pick the executable with the highest revision number. (Move the mouse over the file and it will show you the full filename in the status bar) Also when you install it, choose drive C:, last time I tried a different drive it did not work. If you want to try it, it may work for you and if it doesn't it wont hurt anything just uninstall and try again.

yes, I used this - and it works great. pretty brainless, even dl's the version of ubuntu you choose, you don't already have to have the iso. my only complaint, because i'm lazy, is if you have dual monitors - it's sort of a bitch to install the nvidia/ati drivers (although i haven't tried *coldwar's* script yet (the new one) and get dual display to work. but by far the easiest way to play around with ubuntu. (well, ok, vmware might be an easier way to play around, but not any easier to set up - and this way the performance is better.)

ATI drivers are in the repo's, but they do not have direct rendering support for some hardware. You will have to search google and find out what to put in your xorg.conf for dual monitors to work. New nVidia drivers with h/w acceleration support are available through the restricted driver manager. If you have an nVidia card you can use the command `nvidia-settings` to enable twin view.
